RAINFALL COULD TEST COLLIERY DAMS

If the weatherman's forecast is accurate we could see a real life rain event that could put the Colliery Dam spillway capacity to the test without the aid of engineers modelling.

The warning issued by Environment Canada describes the storms as being an incredible series of storms, intense jet stream bombarding Vancouver Island mountains. The event is further described as: High rainfall rates and a prolonged period of rainy weather will create an extraordinary 3 to 4 day rain event. The first two storms will boost rainfall totals well above the warning criteria for a 24-hour period.

By Tuesday morning Vancouver Island can expect between 25 - 100 mm. For those still thinking in Imperial, that is about 1" - 4" of rain in a 24 hour period.

While this wouldn't come to the Biblical proportion rain event we are told the dams have to be able to withstand, it could provide some interesting demonstrations of what actually happens in a rain event. I hope the folk at CDPPS will be documenting this event, presuming it actually occurs.
