Renowned ceramic artist creates awards for local film festival
Local artist Brendan Tang is no stranger to awards in the art world these days, but this year he has been generous enough to volunteer his talents to design and create the awards statues for this weekend’s Vancouver Island Short Film Festival (VISFF).
Tang, the 2010 West Coast and Yukon SOBEY Art Award winner, currently he is the Artist in Residence at Red Deer College. For this year’s VISFF, Tang designed, created and donated six ceramic awards statues that will be given out to filmmakers in six categories.

thrilled.”The awards will be handed out to filmmakers at the VISFF, which takes place this Friday and Saturday, April 13 and 14 (7pm both nights), in the categories of Best Film, Best Performance, Best Writing, Best Music, Best Technical Production and the People’s Choice Award. The awards ceremony will take place after the film screenings on Saturday night, while a Q&A with the filmmakers will take place on Friday.
“I was happy to create the awards for this year’s festival,” said Tang. “I’m a big fan of independent film and I wanted to do my best to support the filmmakers at the VISFF.”
“We are thrilled with the awards Brendan created,” said Blakeborough. “I think our winning filmmakers will value these awards statues more than the cash awards that come with them. Brendan’s work is just incredible.”

TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE
The Vancouver Island Short Film Festival takes place on April 13 and 14 at 7pm at the Malaspina Theatre at Vancouver Island University.
Tickets are still available at the Nanaimo Arts Council in Nanaimo North Town Centre, the House of Indigo on Church Street and the Nanaimo Art Gallery on the Vancouver Island University campus. Some tickets will also be available at the door. Tickets for this crowd-pleasing show are $15 and are also available online at visff.com/tickets
