Nanaimo Gas Prices Still Stink

Is This What Nanaimo
Wants To Be Known For?

We had the good fortune to need to go to Cowichan Bay yesterday, so once again we treated ourselves to a full tank of 118.9 petrol in beautiful downtown Duncan, where gas prices are ALWAYS lower than the local cartel sells for in Nanaimo.

Some stations in Nanaimo are actually selling for as low as 127.9 with a few inching down to 131.9 from the long weekend high of 137.9, but for the most part 133.9 seems to be the most common price around town.

Not Good For Nanaimo's Reputation

We are spending a few million dollars on economic and tourist development in the city and are trying to create an image we can present to the world to attract more people to come to our lovely harbour city.

You would have to think that being known for selling gasoline for considerably more than other island communities would be a deterrent to those who might be considering setting up a new business on the island. If fuel costs are a significant part of your business model, you might look long and hard at Duncan where fuel still costs 118.9 instead of Nanaimo where it is still well over 130.9.

I can NEVER remember a time when gasoline was not at least 5 cents per litre or 22 cents per gallon, cheaper in Duncan than in Nanaimo. Perhaps Duncan has some genuine competition in the market place unlike Nanaimo, where I understand one or two operators own several stations.
