Nanaimo Transportation Planning Process Launches

TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROCESS LAUNCHED – PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT

The City of Nanaimo is launching a year-long process to develop its first comprehensive long-term Transportation Master Plan.

The Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan (NTMP) will guide transportation decision-making in the City over the next 25 years and beyond and will recommend improvements for all modes of transportation, including walking, cycling, public transit, goods movement and vehicles. This process is important to ensure that transportation investments work towards achieving the City’s strategic goals, make the best use of tax dollars and help shift the community towards a more sustainable future.

“The Transportation Master Plan ensures that the City’s transportation system meets our needs over the next 5, 10 and 20 years and works towards the City’s goals of being a more sustainable community”, said Mayor John Ruttan. “As Nanaimo approaches a population of 100,000, our transportation issues will become more complex and more important; hence an overall plan for transportation moving into the future is critical.”

First Public Open House Oct. 30, Wellington Secondary

The City is inviting the public to get involved in the Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan process. On October 30, the City will host a public open house in the Multi-Purpose Room at Wellington Secondary School located at 3135 Mexicana Road. The City is also launching an on-line survey using a new social media tool called PlaceSpeak. Survey responses will be collected from now until November 16.

“In order for the Transportation Master Plan to be a success, we need to hear what the public and stakeholders think are the important transportation issues and priorities facing Nanaimo”, said City Councilor and Transportation Advisory Committee Chair, George Anderson. “Public input is vital to creating a transportation system that considers the needs of all users, so I encourage everyone to complete the survey or attend the open house.”

The Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan is being developed in conjunction with the Transit Future Plan that is being prepared in a parallel process by the Regional District of Nanaimo and BC Transit. The Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan will also build on the City’s strategic directions outlined in a variety of Council adopted documents, including the Official Community Plan and Corporate Strategic Plan.
