Nanaimo Unemployment Rate Climbs

No One Has An Answer

There is no clear explanation as to why Nanaimo's jobless rate continues to climb and buck both the provincial and national trend. Presently we have the dubious honor of being twice the provincial and national average for those seeking employment and not being able to find it.
However, in the simplest of terms, there are simply more people looking for work than the present economy can generate.
As the chart above shows in January the rate was 8.2%, Feb. 11.6%, Mar. 16% and April 16.3% For the month of April the National average is 7.6% and the Provincial rate sits at 7.9%.I can only speculate (seems that is all anyone can do) that many people moved to Nanaimo during our 'boom' years and were able to find employment which has simply dried up in recent months. It is also possible that some people who had qualified for temporary welfare assistance no longer qualify and are now back in the job market.
Regardless the underlying causes it would appear that city council and city staff are still jointly singing choruses from Polly Anna as they merrily continue their unbridled policy of tax and spend, tax and spend.
Wonder who they think is going to pick up all that freight? It certainly won't be the 16% unemployed or the ever increasing number on the welfare roles.
