WHAT TO DO IN NANAIMO THIS WEEKEND

ENJOY NANAIMO'S WATERFRONT

For completely free admission, you can't beat a stroll along Nanaimo's waterfront. You can park by the Yacht club (sometimes) and stroll along the waterfront from there all the way downtown to Cameron Island.
Along the way you will go through Maffeo Sutton Park, home of the Lion's Pavilion, Swy-a-lana Lagoon/Park, where you can cool your feet in the water, or let the kids have some summer fun.
From here you can take in a scenic 45 minute waterfront harbour or take a trip over to Newcastle Island, for the day or just an hour or two. When was the last time you saw the Harbour City of Nanaimo from the water?
Then continue along the walkway and just enjoy, the always changing waterfront.
You'll find lots of places to grab a bite and little shops of interest. Bring along the camera, you never know what you might see.
Be sure to put a visit to one of Nanaimo's excellent parks on your 'to do' list, there is good fresh water swimming if the ocean does not appeal. Westwood Lake, Long Lake and Coliery Dam are all good choices for freshwater swimming. I think only Westwood has a lifeguard, so keep an eye on the kids!
For just a nice oceanside walk with nature, Pipers Lagoon can't be beat, with it's oceanside beach, to it's Gary Oaks and the lagoon itself. You can also view scenic shack island from the park. Be sure to put it on your list, you won't be disappointed.

SOME EVENTS TO TAKE IN

Friday there is the Farmer's Market beside the Bastion from 10:00am - 2:00pm, with over 50 vendors selling fresh baking and produce, eggs and dairy, and all manner of crafts. While you are there take in the cannon firing at noon beside the Bastion.
Since, you are in the neighbourhood, be sure to take a trip through the Bastion and then perhaps carry on to the Nanaimo Museum to check out their latest exhibits.
In the evening there is the free dance in the park at the Lion's Pavilion. For more information go here.
On Saturday and Sunday, there is Art in the Park in McGregor Park, right across from the Port Theatre.
