Parking Enforcement Changes Monday Mar. 18

New Approach to Downtown Parking Enforcement starts Monday

Starting this Monday, March 18th, administration and enforcement of parking downtown will be carried out by City of Nanaimo Bylaw Officers following Council’s May 14, 2012 decision to bring services in house. Four new City Bylaw Officers will assume duties previously contracted out to Robbins Parking.

In addition to parking enforcement activities, the new Bylaw Officers will carry out security patrols in the downtown core and act as Ambassadors for the City.

“Our new officers are wrapping up an extensive training period that will have given them the tools to effectively enforce the various Bylaw complaints that are common place in the downtown area”, said Parking Manager, Rod Davidson. “The ability to accurately answer questions from visitors and locals alike in regards to downtown Nanaimo and act in conjunction with the RCMP in handling the various issues that may arise is a key priority for these staff”.

The officers are scheduled to work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., carrying out various duties and providing a uniformed presence in the downtown area.

In addition to their parking duties, the new Bylaw Officers – along with one dedicated full-time RCMP Officer - will staff the Community Policing and Services Office located at 18 Victoria Crescent. This office is a convenient place for persons in the downtown area wishing to discuss issues, lodge bylaw complaints or dispute parking tickets. No payments will be accepted at this location. Payments can be made at 411 Dunsmuir Street, by mail or on line at www.nanaimo.ca.
