City of Nanaimo Wage Comparison

The current trucking strike that has frozen traffic at the Port of Vancouver is the result of truckers seeking a higher wage. A quote from the newspaper article said: "According to the union, truckers at the port make $15.59 an hour, substantially less than the B.C. average for a trucker of $23 an hour."

What does this have to do with Nanaimo you may ask?

I found it rather enlightening to learn that truckers responsible for keeping the whole economy moving are currently working for less than $16.00/hr. and the average trucker works for $23/hr. These are union jobs it should be noted, and it is in Vancouver not Nanaimo.

The comparison that truckers are currently working for $16/hr. and are looking to get closer to the average of $23/hr. made me wonder just what we have been doing in Nanaimo with our union contracts, when a Level 1 CUPE worker who does not meet the threshold of being a labourer will start at $23/hr.
