BC Unemployment Rate Increases In May

BC Unemployment Rate Up Slightly in May

Nanaimo follows upward trend


BC's unemployment rate edged up slightly in May from 5.8% in April to 6.1% in May which still put the provincial average below the national average of 7.0%.

Nanaimo's unemployment was pegged at 5.7% which is also an increase from the previous month, but still slightly below the provincial average.

The province lost 1500 private sector jobs while gaining 7,700 public sector jobs. Self-employment decreased by 8,200 jobs.

Wages in British Columbia


In May 2014 the average hourly wage in BC was $24.27, 15 cents below the national average of $24.42. BC ranks fifth in the country for highest wages, Alberta had the highest rate at $27.87. In the youth age range (15 - 24) BC ranks fourth in average hourly wages when compared with other Canadian provinces with $14.77/hour paid on average.
