Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race

Boats Arriving In Nanaimo
For Big Race

If you visit the Boat Basin in the harbour downtown you will notice a big increase in the number of sailing masts dotting the skyline.

They are here for the Van Isle 360 Yacht Race which starts at 10:30 am Saturday June 6 in Nanaimo's harbour. The entrants will then proceed north around Vancouver Island.

The race circum-navigates Vancouver Island and ends in Nanaimo on June 21/09.

There are lots of great places to view the start around Nanaimo's harbour but the best views will be from the Port Authority's Visiting Vessels Pier. The start line stretches across the harbour from the Pier to the Satellite Reef marker. All boats start together at the same time on the same line.

Immediately preceding the start is an informal sail past. The race boats will sail past the pier for an introduction and running commentary from race officials. The 102 foot HMCS Oriole, Canada's oldest and longest serving commissioned ship, will also take part in the sail past. She is participating in the event as a media and VIP platform for the start.

If hunger strikes while taking in all the action there is a pancake and sausage breakfast, from 8:00 am until 11:00, served up by the Salvation Army. The breakfast also takes place on the Visiting Vessels Pier.
