Drowning Victim Identified

Pulled From Nanaimo River

The body of an adult male found in the Nanaimo River early Sunday afternoon has been identified.

Leonard Rosmond JOHNNY age 54 a resident of Nanaimo was pulled from the Nanaimo River near the end of Maki Rd by Nanaimo RCMP at approximately 2:15 pm on Sunday August 9th. A mountain biker out for a ride first spotted his body and called his mother an employee at a nearby campground, who in turn called police and fire crews.

Officers do not believe JOHNNY had been in the water for more than several hours. “The cause of death is unknown at this time and a forensic autopsy will be conducted in the next several days where pathologists will attempt to identity the cause of death”, stated Constable Gary O’Brien media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. JOHNNY was identified later in the day from fingerprints taken from his body and his family was notified of his death late Sunday night.

JOHNNY was last seen at approximately 9:00 AM Sunday morning. He resided on Shoreline Drive in Nanaimo,was fully clothed and investigators do not suspect foul play is involved.
