Morning Fire 1400 Wingrove St. Nanaimo Oct. 19

An early morning fire at 1400 Wingrove Street had residents running from the building with just the clothes on their backs. The owner of the building had awakened to the sound of the alarm, by that time thick smoke was filling the building. He kicked on the doors of others living in the building and fortunately all were able to escape unharmed.

People on the scene said that flames had been coming from the second floor, but by the time I arrived firefighters had the flames knocked down but thick smoke was still billowing from the second floor.

The building is the small strip plaza which features Amriko's restaurant on the corner of Wingrove and Departure Bay Rd. There are several businesses at ground level with residential on the second floor.

Apparently there had been some renovations in the building which also included some electrical work. Late on Friday evening the contractor came to the building as some tenants experienced air quality concerns, which included burning eyes. It is reported the contractor gave the all clear around midnight.
