Colourful Backyard Visitor

Varied Thrush brightens up the yard...

Our backyard bird feeders are popular all year round and at this time of year it is always nice to see this colourful fellow drop in for a bite.

The current crop of 'regulars' include three hummingbirds, about twenty four bush-tits, chick-a-dees, nuthatch, wren, numerous sparrows, house finches, juncos, robins and flickers to name a few. Every now and then to everyone's dismay a hawk will stop by for lunch. This is an infrequent event and has only happened about three times I know of this past year.

Also to my displeasure one or two of those 'rats with nicer coats' will pull a high wire act and make their way to the feeder hanging on the clothesline. I have made it known they are not welcome and have not encouraged them by trying to hand feed them. When I clap my hands they waste no time becoming a flying squirrel, leaping from the feeder and high-tailing it out of the yard.
