First Response In Nanaimo

First Responders To Medical Emergency

While going through some of my photo files and deciding what to send to the recycle bin, I came across this photo I snapped one summer's day past. It was in the Pryde Avenue area and it was early afternoon.

My wife and I were just out having a bit of a drive around when the sound of sirens beckoned so I went to see what kind of a scoop I might score for my website.

This call-out was to a single family home where someone obviously had been experiencing some sort of medical distress and called 911.

What I saw, to this day still has me scratching my thinker, and when relaying this story I am surprised by how many people have similar tales to relate.

In the driveway of the caller there were two ambulances complete with two attendants each, and as this picture shows, one of our bright red shiny firetrucks had just delivered no fewer than four firemen to the scene. I presume the reason for ambling down the road, this nice day was the belief that the four ambulance attendants had things in hand.

We hung around for several minutes to see how this drama would unfold and finally left, observing the person at the house standing on the front step chatting with the first responders, who were all outside, so I presume the emergency was a false alarm.

I have to wonder if this is really the best use of our tax dollars? I am told the ambulance service is the purview of the provincial government and since they don't seem to want to provide adequate service, our city funded firefighters have to head out on these calls, whether they are needed or not.

Really?? Four firemen in that big red shiny truck because someone has a bad case of heartburn??

  1. This is the norm and I'm glad you noticed and have noted it.
This, to me, is an example of completely wasting our taxpayers dollars..not sure how this is charged, but I assume some to medicare and some to taxpayers...again the same pocket (s)
