RCMP Shoot and Kill Duncan Man

Police Involved Shooting

Shortly after 6 pm on March 1st, 2009, officers with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP responded to an abandoned 9-1-1 call, received from a residence located in the Duncan Trailer Park, on Boys Road. Upon arrival, officers contained the scene, and established a dialogue with the 39 year male who was inside the trailer. A senior officer at the scene engaged the male in a face to face conversation, in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The male was in possession of a knife, and the situation deteriorated.

Officers utilized multiple force options, including the conducted energy weapon, without success. A senior officer at the scene discharged his firearm, striking the male. British Columbia Ambulance Service were on scene, and rendered immediate medical assistance to the male. The male was transported to Cowichan District Hospital, where he later died.

Immediate family of the deceased have been notified by police, and request at this time, that their privacy be respected, and that identity be with held to allow them time to notify all family.

The investigation into this death is being conducted by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit. This investigational team is being lead by officers of the Victoria Police Department. The BC Coroner’s Service will be conducting an autopsy in the near future.
