Helping Nanaimo's Homeless

Working Group on Homelessness

Under cloudy skies and conditions giving a taste of what the homeless will soon be dealing with, the local Working Group on Homelessnes hosted a community outreach in Maffeo Sutton Park on Friday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Local social activist and council candidate Gord Fuller explained the purpose of the event on local television. He explained the group is made up of local agencies engaged in helping the homeless in our community find the help and support they need to overcome circumstances which has led to a life on the streets.

The idea behind the event in the park is to go where the people are, rather than expecting them to come to the agencies designed to give them a hand. There was music playing, hot food being dished up, medical assistance, dental help, clothing and blankets and many people on hand to  make known what services are available to people in need.

On Saturday Oct. 1 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 am Sunday Oct. 2, the group is inviting people to attend a sleep out in the park as a show of solidarity for Nanaimo's homeless. I would expect members of city council and especially Mr. Horn to be front and centre for this event.
