Many Faces Of Occupy Nanaimo

Organizers had the perfect day for a show of solidarity with other like-minded people across the country who have gathered to express their discontent with a variety of social issues.

Everything from corporate greed to smart meters to growing your own food to the suffocating effects of living with too much debt were seen as different problems within our society. The gap between the rich and the poor and it seeming to increase was a common theme expressed by different speakers who took the opportunity to address the crowd assembled.

It was good to see several hundred citizens willing to involve themselves in a peaceful demonstration. Hopefully there will be some momentum here which can carry over into greater involvement with the local civic elections coming up next month.

Perhaps greater involvement from all of us over the past two or three decades may have avoided the current state of affairs which many are finding quite unacceptable.
