Jim Routledge Mayoral Candidate Nanaimo 2011 Civic Elections

 Jim Routledge For Mayor
I am running for Mayor of Nanaimo because I believe in connection and community – and I believe that together we can build a better Nanaimo.

My vision for Nanaimo is efficiency in balance. I want to attract people and grow the city; provide for that growth by moving people efficiently and sustainably; make good use of the tools and resources we have to provide responsible, sustainable growth and a safe and caring community.

As Nanaimo grows we have to continue to address transportation issues. People have got to get where they want to go efficiently and as sustainably as possible. People also want and need to grow emotionally, financially and in their careers. I want to help them get where they want to go. Whether we give them the physical transportation or whether we give them the opportunities in terms of rules and bylaws – a structure that supports what they want. I’ve got a business background. I know the value of efficient, organizational requirements. If I don’t have an answer, I know how and where to get it. I know how to work with lawyers, accountants and administrative staff. I’ve got the skill set to do what is necessary.

I also believe that Nanaimo has to care for all its citizens and that includes supported housing in our community for those who have no safe place to call home. I believe that we in Nanaimo have compassion and heart and that we want to and can take care of those in need.

The mayor’s job has to evolve from being just one of nine votes. The mayor has to become the quarterback; he has to become the legs of council. Right now council members are doing all their own research independently. They do an enormous amount of work – work that is often duplicated. The mayor should do the bull work. He’s got the staff and the support. He can get the basic facts and background information to pass on to the councillors.  As mayor I want to give council a “head start” so as to get more and better results.

Transparency has been called an issue. But I think it is not so much about transparency as it is about efficient communication.  I want City Hall, especially mayor and council, to share their thoughts, their questions, the information, the logic and the answers as they appear. We can’t underestimate people’s intelligence. I need all the help I can get with this job – I invite the critique of others and want council to do the same.

The fundamental message I want to get out there is for people to tell me what they want. I know there’s a lot of talk about what people don’t want. I want you tell me what you do want – give me something to work with and I can take it from there. And if our wants collide, we’ll find middle ground. I believe in playing a win/win game.

I want you to vote for me because I have the energy and enthusiasm to carry through on this vision. I’m looking ahead into Nanaimo’s future. I’m looking at the big picture. I am committed to this work. I am connected to the youth in this community, to the seniors and to the business community. I am a successful business person and I want to give back to the community that brought me to where I am today.

I see a clear vision of you and me and council and staff – Building Nanaimo Together.
