IBM 305 RAMAC 'Super' Computer Hard Drive
Weighed Over A Ton And Held 5MB of Data
In 1956 IBM came out with the first 'Super' computer called the 305 RAMAC. RAMAC stood for "Random Access Method of Accounting and Control".
The first of 1,000 such machines was leased to Chrysler's MOPAR Division for $3200 per month. The original 305 RAMAC system could be housed in a room about 30 feet by 50 feet, with the hard drive needing 16 square feet for itself.
It would be sometime before they were suitable for laptops!!
