Economists were surprised by the loss of jobs in Canada in the month of July, with over 30,000 jobs being lost during a month when it was expected a very modest 6,000 would have been added.
British Columbia was hit with nearly half of those losses with 15,000 jobs being shed in July pushing the unemployment rate up .4% to 7.0%. These losses came primarily in the wholesale and retail sector and in the scientific and technical services.
Canada's national unemployment rate was 7.3 per cent in July.The following list shows the percentages for each province for July 2012. (previous month in brackets):
