Remembrance Day 2012 In Nanaimo BC

Remembrance Day 2012 in Nanaimo was cold, wet and miserable in contrast to 2011 when blue skies and perfect autumn weather were the order of the day. In many ways the cold, wet and miserable is a more suiting backdrop to honor the men and women who endured so much and sacrificed so much to ensure our freedom from madmen and tyrants.

It was a cold rain and biting wind that made one physically uncomfortable, it gave pause to the thought that years ago, thousands would have awakened from a fitful nights sleep in a cold, wet trench to be greeted by conditions similar to this. The difference of course is that we put up with it for an hour or so until retreating to the warmth of our heated houses or a restaurant to grab a hot meal. Not so, for those whose home was a muddy, waterlogged trench week in and week out, month in and month out with the only respite being the occasional hot beverage, or if really lucky a hot meal.

Nanaimo still has a strong show of respect for those whom we owe so much with a large crowd putting up with the weather to pay tribute to the fallen thousands who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of God and country. Qualities that may or may not be lacking in this day and age.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
