Collapsed Mine Remediation Work Progressing
On October 10, 2013, a coal mine collapse was discovered on Pine Street near Victoria Road while test drilling for a Nanaimo utility upgrade project. The collapse created a large void under the pavement resulting in Pine Street being closed to address public safety concerns and a detour put in place.
A Geotechnical Consultant hired by the city of Nanaimo assessed the collapse and developed a remediation plan that will allow the utilities to be upgraded and the road to be reopened. The mine remediation is underway and Pine Street should be reopened to through traffic by the middle of December (dependent on weather).
The total cost for remediation of the void is estimated at $240,000.
For continued public safety, the impacted section of road will remain closed off while repairs are completed. Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and follow alternative routes through the area.
