Short Film Festival Call For Entries

The Nanaimo Arts Council is pleased to open the call for submissions for the 5th annual Vancouver Island Short Film Festival (VISFF 2010).

VISFF 2010 will continue to support local talent by providing filmmakers with an opportunity to screen their films in front of a dedicated and growing audience. The VISFF is a juried event; films receiving the distinction of official selection will be entitled to artist fees. Building on the success of previous years, the 2010 show will be comprised of 15 -20 juried films. Cash awards for outstanding films will be given out in several categories, including best film.

“Our main goal is to turn the spotlight on our talented local filmmaking teams: directors, camera operators and editors, actors, composers, musicians, technicians …”, says festival director Johnny Blakeborough.

The festival is open to all genres of films that are 10 minutes in length or less. Films are to be submitted on MiniDV, DVD or VHS tape. Filmmakers may submit multiple entries. Each film requires a separate submission: entry form, release forms, fee, DV/D/tape. The deadline for entry is December 1st, 2009.

The VISFF is one of the Nanaimo Arts Council (NAC) premiere events. NAC Manager, Odette Laramee, acknowledges that sponsor support from local businesses, the media, City of Nanaimo and the Provincial government play a large role in enabling the arts council to foster relationships between film-based artists. “The cultural development of a community is often grounded in the burgeoning ideas, and actions, that take place when teams of artists are giving the opportunity to meet and create collaborative works of art”. Laramee also notes film industry data, “BC is a place where business, government, labour and the community work together to support the province’s billion-dollar film industry”
