Nanaimo Unemployment Rate June 2012 6.1%

Nanaimo Jobless Rate Up 1.1%

The month of June 2012 showed the unemployment rate in Nanaimo, while below the provincial average increased by 1.1% over the May rate of 5.0%. In fact this increase is a reverse trend of the past few months when the jobless rate was in decline.

By the numbers:

January 6.2%
February 6.5%
March 5.3%
April 4.8%
May 5.0%
June 6.1%

Whether or not these numbers are of any real value is debatable given that last year we were told we had nearly 15% unemployed. It turns out that number was the result of an error in data collecting, and given this number is based on such a small sample, it could be considered of little value other than perhaps that it may show a trend. Whether the number of 6.1% is accurate can not be determined and bear in mind it represents those able and looking to work, it would not reflect those no longer looking for work but who are being supported by social welfare.

Given the number of folk finding themselves reliant on the local food banks it is safe to say Nanaimo has far more than 6% of the population in need of social help.
