Arts and Culture Nanaimo

The Birth of More Bureaucracy

Presentations to city council on Nov. 18 highlight the importance of arts and culture to Nanaimo and the role they play in making our city a more desirable place to live. Bob Kuhn from Parks Recreation and Culture presented council with the draft version of the city's soon to be adpoted Cultural Plan.

NEDC head, Sasha Angus highlighted the findings of a recent arts and culture study which attributes nearly $150,000,000 in economic activity directly related to arts and culture.

The two reports support the recommendation contained in the City's Draft Cultural Plan which is to create a new creative city commission, aided by a new cultural services division which would include a new full time cultural manager at city hall. Of course the new manager would need an office, a budget, staff etc. etc.

We are witnessing the conception of a whole new bureaucracy being created by those who keep telling you they are keeping an eye on how your tax dollars are being spent. You might wonder why Parks Recreation and Culture with it's massive budget wouldn't already be actively managing 'culture' in the city of Nanaimo.

  1. Perhaps it is because in Parks and Culture in Nanaimo, the "Arts and Culture" part has been lost while the "Parks" part seems to include all sports. Culture is a vast category as is "Arts" and we need some serious attention and recognition of the diverse genres in this area.

    1. So then, let's have you and your other "huge arts economic activity generators" get off the damn tax dole and make it on your own instead of constantly siphoning from government's (my and my fellow taxpayers) pockets!

  2. Give me a break! NO, taxpayers do not need to give more attention (MONEY $$$) to arts and culture. This latest plan and NEDC study are bogus. The sector it says brings in $154 million. But the major economic drivers and employers in Nanaimo and area are the big movie theatres, the newspapers, radio and TV stations, not to mention web provider firms, heritage institutions, museums. I'm sure these employers will not be getting any of the extra tax infusions suggested, although they are the ones who employee most of the people and pump money back into our economy. The culture plan is nothing but creative math, creative accounting and exaggerations.
