Nanaimo Seniors Scammed!

New Twist on Old Scam

Calls originating in Peru claiming to the the 'lawyer' representing the 'grandson' have been preying on Nanaimo seniors over the past few weeks.

The RCMP have received many complaints in the past two weeks with seniors reporting being taken for $3500, $7,000 and $24,000. The victims thought they were helping supply bail fees, car replacement costs or legal fees to get their grandson out of jail in a foreign land.

Victims have followed instructions which included sending funds through a local wire transfer from the Canada Post offices in Shoppers Drug Mart Stores.

RCMP are urging family members to make their parents, grandparents and elderly neighbours aware of this latest scam to avoid falling victim.
