RID 911 Gets Drunk Drivers Off Road

Example of

RID 911

Working

Another driver was successfully stopped from possibly killing himself or some one else after RID 911 was used to report a drunk driver last week.

The caller to the Nanaimo Operational Communications Centre (OCC) reported seeing a vehicle, an older model pickup, going north bound on the Island Highway shortly after 6 PM on  Saturday April 24th.  The caller said the vehicle was weaving all over the road and the driver appeared to be drinking alcohol.  The caller provided the vehicle plate, a description of the vehicle and the location and direction of travel to 911 operators.

As the vehicle was driving north and leaving the Nanaimo Detachment area, the vehicle information was quickly passed along to Oceanside RCMP.  Soon after receiving it, they advised the suspect vehicle had been stopped by Oceanside officers near the intersection of the Island Highway and the Alberni Highway.
Oceanside members reported the driver, a male age 50 and a resident of Victoria had been drinking alcohol as reported but was not legally impaired.  Investigating officers did however find grounds to issue him with a 24 hour driving prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act and towed his vehicle from the scene.

“This was an excellent example of how effective the RID 911 program is. By simply picking up the phone and calling 911 you are doing your part to keep our roads and highways clear of drunk drivers" said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.  “Remember don’t wait to call, every second counts. Pull over when safe to do so, dial 911 and give the description and last known location of the vehicle” said O’Brien.
