Nanaimo News Notes April 11, 2011

DNBIA: has a new president representing the 1,000+ property and business owners in downtown Nanaimo. The Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association's past president, Bill Carter resigned mid-March and is now replaced with Shari Molchan who is the owner of Molchan Financial on Commercial Street.
Community Grants: Nanaimo was the recipient of a $77,000 grant under the climate action revenue incentive program for our participation in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Ney: the Frank Ney statue in Maffeo Sutton park is once again complete after the Wellington foundry recast and replaced the sword stolen by vandals last year. Cost was about $1000.
Layton: during his campaign said he is opposed to the HST in BC, but is happy with the way it is working in Nova Scotia. Go figure?
False Alarms: keep the RCMP busy attending to these nuisance calls. Last year they attended 898 false alarms and in 2009 they attended 878 false alarms. If faulty (or over sensitive alarms) result in more than three false alarms the RCMP will issue a bill for $140 for the offending business.
