Nanaimo News Notes April 18

Not Nanaimo: but the overturned tanker truck on the Malahat caused a lot of inconvenience and potential environmental havoc on Saturday night. The 'hat' was closed for nearly 24 hours as crews worked to clear the mess caused by a suspected drunk driver of the truck. Traffic was closed to traffic both ways during the incident.
New NDP: leader was elected on the weekend.  Adrian Dix got the nod from his party, capturing the support of 9,772 members from his party on the third round of balloting.
Cougar/s: in Cedar have been dining on lamb chops lately, with the report a farmer on DeCourcy Road has lost at least three of his flock to an area cougar. Fears the attacks had been dogs were set aside after officials investigated what was obviously a cougar kill.
Social Service Workers: are taking a strike vote on April 20. Approximately 200 workers in Nanaimo will be participating in the vote.
Cell Tower: in Cedar is now being opposed by some residents in the area. It seems that the general public are not entirely convinced of the harmlessness of a cell tower as the one planned by Telus in the Wobank Road area is meeting with opposition.

Teens Charged: the two teens involved in the infamous north end brawl have been charged with assault. The teens (who can not be named of course) are aged 13 and 14 and got their few minutes of fame on YouTube proving that the weaker sex is just as capable of evil as the guys.
Soccer Drop In: this Friday April 23 at Merle Logan Field at Beban Park starts at 8:30pm For information email nanaimosoccer@yahoo.ca.
Royal Bank: has donated $50,000 to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital which will go to the target of raising $4 million to purchased needed equipment for the ER expansion currently underway at the hospital.
Michael Olson Staying?: it is reported that the new head coach of the Clippers has offered popular assistant coach Michael Olson the position and would like him to stay on, Olson is not committing at the moment, saying a future press release would answer everyone's questions.
CUPE President: Barry O'Neil of Nanaimo has been re-elected for a 7th term at CUPE's 48th annual BC Convention held in Vancouver. CUPE intends to focus on a two year plan to engage their members politically with the objective of kicking out the BC Liberals and bring in an NDP government.
