NOT HAPPY WITH CANDIDATES IN NANAIMO CIVIC ELECTION?

THINK YOU CAN DO A BETTER JOB?

If you are one of those people who say things like " I'm not voting for any of the bums, they are all the same" or " I am voting for none of the above".

Maybe it's time for you to throw you hat in the ring and become a part of the solution rather than just part of the problem. If you have the time and desire to help your community you have just about all of the qualifications needed to become the next civic leader in our community.

As long as you have lived in BC for at least six months, are a Canadian citizen and are not disqualified from voting you are eligible to run for City Council, Mayor or the School Board.

You are advised before filing your papers for Mayor or Council that you contact legislative services at 250-755-4405 and make an appointment to make sure you get all the needed information.

You can pick up a nomination package for mayor or council from City hall at 283 Franklyn Street for Nanaimo and from 7192 Lantzville Rd. School board candidates can contact the administration offices at 395 Wakesiah Ave.

The nomination period runs from Sept. 30 at 9:00am until Oct. 14 at 4:00pm and your papers must be filed in this time frame to run in the next civic election.

So .... what are you waiting for? Democracy never works at it's full potential unless the public takes the time to be informed and get involved.

In case you don't know how much the salaries are for Mayor or Council; the Mayor receives $76,911 and councilors receive $25.539. They also enjoy 100% medical and dental coverage. The Mayor position would require full time commitment (although Frank Ney was an exception) while councillor's are still a part time commitment.
