STEPHEN HARPER ON VANCOUVER ISLAND

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today contrasted the Conservative Government’s record of accomplishments for North Vancouver Island with the inaction of the Ottawa NDP. Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Comox, the Prime Minister explained how Jack Layton and the Ottawa NDP are out of touch with the concerns of the Island’s working families.

“Remember when we cut the GST? The Ottawa NDP voted against it, not once, but twice. Tax relief for small business, the Ottawa NDP voted against it. Tax measures to support families, the Ottawa NDP voted against those too,” said Prime Minister Harper. “The Ottawa NDP simply doesn’t get it. They simply don’t understand the issues that matter to working families.”

The Prime Minister went on to highlight the Conservative Government’s record of accomplishments for the North Island.

  • An estimated $121 million investment in infrastructure upgrades for 19 Wing Comox, including a runway rehabilitation project and the construction of a new health care facility.
  • Municipal infrastructure money to ensure the water supply in the Comox Valley keeps pace with population growth.
  • Funding to expand and develop Port McNeill’s waterfront to allow the harbour to service a greater number of recreational, commercial fishing and industry vessels.
  • Six new Coast Guard vessels to protect British Columbia’s coastline.

“Our government is delivering for Vancouver Island, but there’s more to be done,” said Prime Minister Harper. “And we need a strong team of Conservative Island MPs in Ottawa to make it happen.”
