Copper Thieves Hit Light Standards

Copper Theives

Back Again

Copper thieves are back at it again after two recent incidents in Cedar involving copper wiring being removed from roadside light standards.

The first incident was reported on September 22 near Maughan Rd and the most recent, on Wednesday October 12th near Komoqua St . Both locations are adjacent to the Duke Point Highway near MacMillan Rd. In both cases, junction boxes attached to roadside lighting were targeted and hundreds of meters of copper wiring was taken. The junction boxes were inoperable afterwards and needed to be replaced adding an additional cost to the existing theft.

“We believe the same persons are responsible for these incidents and we are asking the motoring pubic and residents of Cedar to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity . At this time, we do not have descriptions of persons involved or the make of vehicles associated to them. Any suspicious activity around light standards, particularly at night, should be immediately reported to the police,”said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP.

If you know who is responsible for these thefts and don’t wish to provide your name, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or go online to www.nanaimocrimestoppers.ca
