First Day Green Bin Program

A Good First Day Showing

People in the Townsite area are on one of the first routes to participate in the city's new food waste, green bin composting program. The first pick up day after Thanksgiving was a combined green bin and regular garbage pick up day, next week will be the green bin and regular recycle (yellow bag) day.

I am on this new program and was actually surprised how much of my regular garbage wound up in the green bin, which I would estimate to be over 50% of the total. This week for example, my regular garbage was able to fit in a grocery bag from the supermarket as opposed the usual green garbage bag.

Judging by the number of green bins which were out in my neighbourhood I would estimate that well over 50% of all residents are participating in the program.

I have to admit I was a little skeptical as to the usefulness of this program, but if this past week is an example of things to come, I think it is a worthwhile program from the point of view of keeping stuff out of the landfill site. Whether it is actually cost effective or not, I will have to leave to the bean counters somewhere.

Maybe in the spring the city will give all us gardening types, a couple of yards of compost for free, delivered to my front yard ........ I can only hope can't I ?  :^)

  1. Maybe someone from City Staff Can explain why there are skid marks in front of most Nanaimo homes. Maybe the RCMP should measure ALL skid marks from each trucks route and charge each driver.
