Nanaimo Unitarian Fellowship Shelter Open

Cold Weather Shelter Now Open

The cold weather shelter located at 595 Townsite Road is once again open to provide shelter to Nanaimo's homeless. They were officially open on Nov. 15 but because of the current weather had been open several days prior. Last night the shelter provided comfort for 20 people which nearly filled the 24 bed facility.

The shelter does not require sobriety from those seeking shelter, but they are not allowed to bring alcohol or drugs onto the premises. Providing they are not a danger to themselves or others they are welcome whether they are drunk or high when they show up.

Guests will receive something warm to eat when they arrive and again in the morning before leaving the shelter. They are welcome from 7:00 pm until 7:00 am 7 days per week from now until mid-March 2012.

Guests clothing is quite often wet so one of the services provided is the ability to launder their clothing which means the Fellowship can always make use of track pants giving guests something to change into while their clothes are being laundered.

The shelter can always make use of large jackets, track pants and cotton socks. These and other items of clothing etc. can be dropped off at Volunteer Nanaimo located at #3 - 2350 Labieux Road (under Coastal Community Credit Union) who will see that the shelter gets the items they can make use of.

More volunteers are always welcome so if you would like more information please call the Unitarian Fellowship at 250-755-1215.
