Storm Knocks Out Power On Vancouver Island

Hydro Repairs
Create Traffic Jam Through Parksville

That intense, but short wind storm that blew through Nanaimo on Friday afternoon left nearly 35,000 Vancouver Island residents in the dark as hydro workers scrambled to restore power.

On Saturday my wife and I went to Port Alberni around 10:30 am and noticed a large tree had knocked down the hydro line beside the new Island Highway just past the Parksville cutoff. When we returned around 1:00 pm we were routed through Parksville as the new Island Highway was closed to southbound traffic at the Alberni Highway intersection.

Downtown Parksville was the scene of an unusual traffic jam, as all the traffic heading south and all the traffic heading north was unable to use the new Highway. The resulting traffic jam saw northbound cars backed up from the bridge in Parksville just about to the A&W in Nanoose. It made me wonder what Parksville traffic would now be like if the new highway had not been built?
