Free Movie, Popcorn and Gleaners Exhibition Tour

Agnès Varda | The Gleaners and I (2000)
Friday March 13 and Friday April 10
7PM Screenings

Presented as part of the Nanaimo Art Gallery exhibition Gleaners, the film The Gleaners and I (2000) is a documentary recording modern day gleaners while they scavenge for food, forgotten items, and trinkets in both urban and rural regions of France. Traditionally gleaners are those who search farmers fields for produce that mechanized harvesting has left behind, although in urban settings gleaners dumpster dive for objects and food that have been rejected because of minor bruising or damage.

Directed and written by filmmaker Agnès Varda, we follow her hand-held camera as she describes her filmmaking as a kind of gleaning also, where scouting subjects whether it is objects, food, or people to be captured on film is chance oriented. Varda gleans footage of a series of individuals from a range of class backgrounds who’ve learned to glean their food in order to survive, such as a successful restaurant owner, a teacher, and artists who use recycled material in their work. The documentary was first shown at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and is distributed by Zeitgeist Video.

These screenings are part of Nanaimo Art Gallery’s exhibition Gleaners on until May 2, 2015. Join us for a free tour along with each screening of The Gleaners and I. Meet at 7pm in Art Lab, at Nanaimo Art Gallery’s 150 Commercial Street location.
