Harbour City Star Stops Publishing April 10

An article in the local Daily about the recent Black Press purchase of the Nanaimo Daily News and the Harbour City Star reports the Star will cease publishing on April 10.

The new owners intend to focus their energies on growing their circulation and improving the quality of the product in this market. Eventually the printing and mail room at the Daily News will close and the paper will be produced at Black's more modern printing plant in Ladysmith. The move will mean the loss of about 20 jobs at the Daily.

This means that with the ownership of the News Bulletin and the Daily News there is no advertising competition in the local market in the print media. Whether that serves the business community well or not, only time will tell as market pressures to keep ad rates down, don't likely exist.
