Cyclist Dies After Bus Collision


A 37 year male cyclist who collided with a Regional District of Nanaimo Transit bus early last night has died as a result of his injuries. At approximately 4:45 PM on Monday September 2nd the cyclist was riding west bound along Albert St approaching Pine St when his bike left the curb and struck the passenger side of the oncoming bus.

 The male suffered severe internal and head injuries and was not conscious when he was transported from by BC paramedics to Nanaimo Regional General hospital. He died shortly after 11 PM.

Witnesses told police the cyclist was on the wrong side of the road and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police officers assisted the three passengers with carrying on to their destinations and a representative from the RDN Transit drove the bus driver from the scene.

RCMP Victim Services are assisting the passengers and family of the deceased while employees of the RDN transit are providing assistance to their driver. There will be no charges pending as a result of the collision.
