Free the Fuzz Fundraiser

The Nanaimo RCMP are proud to bring back for the second year Free the Fuzz , an interactive fund raiser in support of Special Olympics .

The popular event that raised over $16,000 dollars last year, kicks off Friday September 17th at 5 PM and runs to Sunday September 19th at 4 PM. Throughout the weekend Cst Norm Smith will once again be perched high above Wal-mart for the entire weekend. Friday night will see the ever popular rock and roll band “Chevy Ray and the Fins” performing a free benefit concert outside Wal-Mart from 8 to 10 PM.

On Saturday ,the RCMP will be showcasing their many talents and skills. From 1 to 3 PM , the Emergency Response Team(ERT) and Police Dog Services(PDS) will be putting on demonstrations in the parking lot. ‘We will also have our Bike Section along with the Forensic Identification Section, West Coast Marine Section, First Nations policing and Recruiting on display to answer the public’s many questions.


In addition to the regular members,most of the community volunteer groups will be out manning tables on Saturday afternoon, offering brochures and providing information on their respective programs.

Raffle tickets will be sold all weekend for $5 dollars .”One of the more unique prizes being offered is a signed Henrik Sedin hockey stick “said Constable Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. Also being raffled is a Norco Mountain Bike from Pacific Rim and Cycle, a big screen TV from Wal-mart, a $250 dollar BBQ from Zellers and a $100 gift certificate from the Great Canadian Superstore. Pacific Rim and Cycle will also have a tent set up on Saturday and they will be tuning bikes for donation. Jobe’s Daughters will be out this year too and will be offering face painting to the kids , also by donation"said O'Brien.

Save On Foods will once again be flipping burgers and hotdogs all weekend and bouncey castles will be up and running on Saturday and Sunday. All of this by donation only.

Sunday afternoon its sports day. This year the Vancouver Island Raiders will be putting on a mini boot camp for the kids while the Nanaimo Clippers will be on hand to play some hockey and work on drills with the kids.” We think we have something for everyone, it should be a great weekend so come out, enjoy and support our Special Olympians” said O’Brien
