 Community Outreach a Huge Success

The RCMP open house on Saturday May 10 was a big hit with Nanaimo residents young and old and it would have to be said the community outreach was a resounding success.

There was Sonny and his partner Const. Allan who have had adventures pretty much all across Canada during their career together. While Sonny may be heading into retirement Const. Allan will be working with a new partner whom he may find a bit more difficult to keep up with. He and Sonny have been together long enough they work at the same pace, which may not be the case with the younger, newer canine.

Officers in the distinction Red Serge as well as an interesting mascot (not entirely sure of the species) were busy making favourable impressions with all and in particular our youngest citizens. There were displays of their forensic crime vehicle, the tactical teams heavy truck and some of their equipment, bicycle team, motorcycle and of course the familiar cruiser with lights flashing.

In addition to all that there was a childrens identification program being offered and lots of freshly popped popcorn and your choice of a fresh off the BBQ hamburger or tube steak, skillfully prepared by Const. O'Brien.

I am sure that more than one of our youngest left the event thinking about a possible career choice later in life. I still have a black and white picture of myself as a young fellow proudly standing beside a Mountie in Red Serge out front of the Peace Tower in our nation's capitol.
