Noon Cannon Firing At Nanaimo Bastion

KABOOOMMMM .............. it is officially the summer festival season in Nanaimo

You know summer has come again to the Harbour City when you hear the noon hour cannon firing echoing across the harbour.

The event which takes place each day from now until labour day makes the most use these cannons were ever actually put to during their life in Nanaimo. They are not replicas, but the real working cannons brought here in the mid 1800's to protect the harbour. They were never called into service fortunately, but it is said you can still find cannon balls on Protection Island which used to be fired upon during practice in days gone by.

If you haven't experienced this daily ritual, grab your camera and head on down to Pioneer Plaza, right beside the Bastion, and be sure to cover your ears!
