Beban Park Master Plan

BEBAN PARK MASTER PLAN PROCESS UNDERWAY

This year marks the sixtieth year of operation for Nanaimo’s popular Beban Park. The park has seen many changes and been the site of hundreds of significant community events over the past six decades. It is Nanaimo’s largest recreation campus consisting of more than twenty public facilities and amenities.

To prepare for the park’s future staff is working on creating a park master plan. The intent is to establish a shared vision for the next twenty years for the park that will meet the needs of our growing community. Chances are you’ve visited the park for one reason or another and have some ideas on how to improve the park or thoughts on what should be maintained. The City wants to hear those ideas.

The planning process includes a number of phases; the current phase is to assess the community’s vision for the park and to identify priorities for development. Interviews with park licence holders such as the Beban Park Golf Course and VIEX, user groups, and staff will be conducted over the next three weeks. Visitors to the park will also be canvassed for their input by way of a survey (available online and in hard copy) and will be invited to a series of input sessions over the next two months.

Two public input sessions are planned for the month of June; the first will be on Tuesday, June 4th from 4pm-9pm Beban Park Social Centre and the second will be held Saturday, June 8th from 10am-2pm at the Altrusa Playground at Beban Park.

Once gathered, the input will be compiled into a draft plan and presented to the public to ensure the plan captures their thoughts. After revisions staff will then present the final version of the plan to the Parks Recreation and Culture Commission and to City Council for review and consideration before the end of the year.
