On the way down to Victoria on the weekend we got a pleasant surprise at the gas pumps in Duncan. While Nanaimo was pumping at 135.9 and Victoria was pumping at 139.9 we were able to fill up in Duncan for only 124.9.
I am surprised at how complacent I have become when I can refer to a gas price of 124.9 as 'only'. It would seem the oil companies are making the most of their monopolies but the retailers in Duncan have consistently figured out how to stay in business while selling gas for 10 cents a litre less than Nanaimo.
There is never any explanation for the wild swings in retail gas prices, especially in Nanaimo. The Nanaimo stations were pumping at 129.9 for quite sometime, then dropped to 127.9 for a few days, only to shoot back up as high as 141.9 for a day, before settling back in at 135.9.
The only logical explanation this skeptic can think of, is the most recent spike was meant to capture as much extra profit as possible on the upcoming long weekend.
The reason why Duncan gas prices are cheaper than Nanaimo is because it's cheaper for companies to haul the gas over the ferry to Nanaimo then transport it to Duncan. Whereas here in Nanaimo, they have to haul it over to Nanaimo and then...oh wait
