Nanaimo Set For 'Hotel Explosion'?

Multi-plex/Hotel/Residential Project Comox & Island Highway

'Hilton' hotel project - Front Street

With the announcement of the $80 million multi-plex/hotel/residential project on the site of the Howard Johnston hotel it raises the hope that in the not too distant future Nanaimo's downtown will be bursting to life attracting people (and their wallets) from far and wide.

The 'convention centre hotel' being proposed by SSS Manhao (subject to an extension) is said to have at it's core a business plan bringing 75,000 + tourists to Nanaimo via their Asian Tour company. If that materializes we could expect to see nearly 200 tourists every day in our downtown core.

The 36 storey 'Hilton' hotel project being proposed by Insight envelopment and others is said to provide 300+ rooms right on our downtown waterfront attracting tourists from far and wide drawn to the 'Hilton' name.

If all of these projects come to fruition then downtown Nanaimo will likely be unrecognisable from it's current state not many years from now. I presume that is the Nanaimo our city father's and mother's envision for the Nanaimo of the future.

It will be interesting to see how many of these projects are supported by the 'build it and they will come' business plan.
