Smoking & Open Flame Ban - Nanaimo Parks

NEWS RELEASE

Open flames, smoking not permitted in City parks

The City of Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Environment department would like to remind residents and park users that smoking, campfires and barbeques are not permitted in City parks. Propane barbeques, however, are permitted within the approved locations of the picnic shelters in Bowen Park and Maffeo Sutton Park and on picnic tables within all parks. Signs are being posted in City parks.

For further details or clarification on the notice please contact Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Environment at 250-756-5200.

Nanaimo, Parks, Recreation and Environment encourage all users of the parks and trails systems to use caution when in the parks and on the trails, and to be aware of all fire hazards.

To report a fire in a City of Nanaimo park or trail, please call 911. To report a wildfire, please call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on most cellular networks.

"With the hot temperatures coming earlier this year, fire season is upon us, so please be careful when enjoying our parks and trails as they are not irrigated and are subject to fires easily being started. Areas such as Westwood Lake, Neck Point Park and Piper's Lagoon, for example, have hundreds if not thousands of people a day so please don't smoke or ahve open flames in the parks." - Al Britton Manager, Park Operation City of Nanaimo
