16 - year old girl stabbed on Fairway Cresent

A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after being stabbed. A 19-year-old man is in custody and is expected to be charged with aggravated assault.

The incident happened at 12:30 am on Tuesday in the 3300 block of Fairway Cresent. Constable Gary O’Brien says police received calls about an assault that left the girl with life-threatening stab wounds. The suspect reportedly fled the scene. Corporal Dean Muir and his canine partner Arco managed to track the male suspect on a nearby street.

O’Brien says the 16-year-old knew her attacker, but the nature of the relationship is still under investigation. It was the intervention of a neighbour that likely saved the girls life who called out when he heard the commotion. The suspect fled the scene when the neighbour said he was calling police.

This is the third violent crime Nanaimo has seen in recent days. Two men died in the shooting at Western Forest Products which also resulted in two others being seriously injured. This was followed by the stabbing of a man in Harewood which is now followed by this most recent event.

  1. While Nanaimo has had a bad streak of events, I feel that the city is as safe as it ever was. The WFP incident is obviously sad and scary, followed by the two knife incidents. However, none of these were "random" in that the general public was in any proposed danger. Let's think about all the times innocent people in Vancouver were caught in crossfire while they dined in a restaurant or when someone is randomly attacked while they wait at a bus stop. We've seen these stories in the news enough that the severity of it is lost in the repetition. Until those things happen here (and on a somewhat frequent basis), I remain in the opinion that moving my family here was the right decision.

And those saying that Nanaimo is becoming like the US, truly have no idea what it's like south of our border.
