Deer In Townsite Area

Young Deer In Townsite Area

A familiar site in the Departure Bay or Hammond Bay area, deer and deer herds are becoming a point of controversy with local residents.

Gardeners of course are no friends of the deer as they love to graze on prize winning roses, and salad crops are a pure delicacy to their palates. Unless you wish to surround your yard with a ten foot high deer fence, which are not exactly things of beauty, it is nigh impossible to keep them out of your garden.

A considerable number of the deer are struck and killed by cars which of course is neither good for deer nor driver. This also sets up the possibility that in order to avoid a deer a driver may sooner or later swerve and hit a pedestrian or another car in the process.

As is usual in these cases there have been a few meetings and hand wringing and talking about the problem, but of course nothing has been resolved. It will not likely be resolved until the problem escalates and someone actually gets hurt.

This morning about 6:30 am I spotted this young fellow wandering down Cadogan Street which is in the Townsite area close to Terminal Park. I am not sure how many deer there are living in the city of Nanaimo but their numbers are growing unchecked, with few natural predators to control their numbers.

Remember as cute as 'Bambi' is, they are still wild animals and their hoofs are wicked weapons if they feel they have to use them.
