Serious Injury Crash Hammond Bay & Highway 19a

Two Car Collision
Injures Three

A two vehicle crash just before 9 pm on Friday May 20 closed the intersection of Hammond Bay Rd and Highway 19a for several hours and sent three adults to hospital. Initial reports had one person trapped in their vehicle.

At approximately 8:50 pm Nanaimo RCMP, City of Nanaimo Fire and Rescue and BC Paramedics responded to a report of a two car collision.  Investigators believe the 55 female driver of a northbound Honda Accord for reasons unknown, lost control of her vehicle and collided with a Toyota Corolla which was stopped at the intersection of Hammond Bay and Highway 19a. The Honda Accord struck the medium prior to the collision causing the vehicle to be launched in the air and striking the stationary Corolla.

The 36 year female driver of the Corolla was air lifted to a Vancouver hospital with serious life threatening head injuries. Her 59 year old female passenger was taken to local hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Honda Accord sustained leg injuries and was also transported to the local hospital for treatment and later released.

The intersection was closed for several hours while Nanaimo RCMP assisted by an RCMP Traffic Analyst examined the scene. As of this morning, the 36 year old female is considered stable but in serious condition.

The cause of the crash is unknown. It appears alcohol was not a contributing factor. Anyone who has information which could assist with the investigation is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
