Nanaimo Welfare Cheques And Postal Strike

Nanaimo Office Hands Out 2,564 Cheques
Most Recipients Are Direct Deposit

An article in the Times Colonist reports that the Ministry of Social Development will be handing out some 2,564 cheques which usually would have gone through the post office. It would seem the promise to deliver welfare cheques did not happen.

The article went on to say, that in the province the vast majority of welfare clients get their funds via direct deposit, saying that on average 80% receive their money that way. If that average holds true for Nanaimo and 2.564 people represents 20% of the total then 12,820 people in Nanaimo would be relying on welfare to keep body and soul together.
