Nanaimo Search and Rescue find lost
hikers
Braving torrential rain and wind, Nanaimo Search and Rescue (NSAR) did
what they do best, finding two hikers lost on Mount
Benson.
On Wednesday March 9, at approximately
4:30 pm NSAR were alerted their services would be required after two female
hikers, ages 16 and 25, called 911 reporting they had lost their way making it
back from a day hike up Mount Benson. The two were able to provide their
location via GPS on their phone but were not dressed for the weather and had no
means to start a fire. The hikers were told to stay put and just an hour later
upwards of 15 trained NSAR members staged at Benson View Rd, off of Kilpatrick
Rd, and set off for the two.
Around 7:30 pm, NSAR had located two very tired, extremely wet but
grateful hikers and safely escorted them off the mountain and back to their
vehicle.
"This is just another classic example of the dedication and commitment
NSAR provides on any given day, regardless of the circumstances. The conditions
could not have been worse but without hesitation, these volunteers set off to do
what they are trained to do and successfully carried out their duties" said
Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
